Hiking the Classic Inca Trail

This is the most popular trek in Peru, and a permit needs to be obtained to access it. (500 permits are available per day.) Only a registered tour operator is allowed to purchase permits, and this tour operator will provide a guided service along the trek and Machu Picchu. Permits should be booked well in advance (4 to 5 months in advance for the high season which goes from April to August and 2 to 3 months for the low season).

Location: It starts at kilometers 82 (aka Piscacucho) of the rail road that runs from Cusco to Machu Picchu Town and it ends in Machu Picchu, District of Machu Picchu, Province of Urubamba and Region of Cusco

Whitewater Rafting in Urubamba River

The Urubamba River is separated in 2 sections. The lower section of the river usually starts near Urubamba Town and it offers rapids class II and III, while the upper section usually starts near Pisaq Town and it offers class III and IV rapids. The tour can be done in one or two days. The one day tour does not require previous experience during the dry season (May to October).

This is one of the most beautiful hikes in southern Peru due to the variety of breathtaking landscapes encountered along the way. In only 4 days, the Salkantay Trek will take the traveler from a lively fertile Andean Valley to an arid land with scarce vegetation surrounded by imposingly high snowy peaks and colorful small lakes, and from there to the intriguing cloud forest, where vegetation increases in size and volume as elevation drops. The National Geographic Adventure magazine included this hike in a list of the 25 best hikes around the globe a few years ago.

Hiking to Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain

Vinicunca is also know by locals as "Apu Winicunca" and/or "Montaña Colorada", and tourists know it as the Rainbow Mountain. It is said that this breath taking geological formation with several ocher tone colors was hidden from thousands of years due to the glaciers that covered this colorful mountain. Only a few years ago the glaciers in the pass melt apparently as a consequence of global warming.
