Location & Visiting

Located in the Southern hemisphere between the Tropics of Capricorn and Cancer, Peru is strategically located in the center of South America (towards the west).

Peru doesn't require a Tourist Visa from the citizens of many countries. Citizens of countries such as the US, Canada, England, Ireland, France, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Australia, Japan, Israel and the Netherlands don't need a Visa to enter Peru. (A full list of countries can be found at this link). All these travelers need is a valid passport with an expiration date of no less than six months and three blank pages. A traveler with a tourist visa won't be allowed to stay more than 183 days.

Peru can be visited by air, sea and land. Jorge Chavez Airport, essentially Peru’s only international airport, is located in El Callao, Lima. International cruises use the ports of El Callao, Ilo, Matarani, Salaverry and Paita. The main points of access by land are located in the Region of Tumbes (northern border with Ecuador), in the Region of Tacna (southern border with Chile), in the Region of Puno (eastern border with Bolivia)and in the Region of Puerto Maldonado (eastern border with Brazil).

Peru by Plane

Peru has three operational international airports, but only one is able to handle large aircrafts. This is the Jorge Chávez Airport located in "Callao," in the Region of Lima. See below for more details:

Jorge Chavez International Airport - Lima

Arrivals and Departures: This airport receives flights from all the main cities in the world. All departures and arrivals can be checked at the Jorge Chávez International Airport site. Follow the link and look for "flight information" located to the left of the screen.

Highlights: Food court in common area, restaurants after passing security control, bookstores, handcraft stores, locker storage at a cost, pharmacy, Internet shop, coffee shops.

Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport - Cusco

 

Location: Velasco Astete Avenue (no number), City of Wanchaq, Region of Cusco.

Arrivals and Departures: This airport operates only direct flights coming from and going to La Paz in Bolivia (Amaszonas Airlines), Arequipa, Juliaca, Lima and Puerto Maldonado.

Highlights: Snack bar after passing security control, bookstore, handcraft stores, coffee shops.

Rodríguez Ballón International Airport - Arequipa

 

Location: City of Cerro Colorado, Region of Arequipa.

Arrivals and Departures: This airport operates only direct flights coming from and going to La Paz in Bolivia (Amaszonas Airlines), Cusco, Juliaca, Lima and Tacna.

Perú by Road

Peru has four main international borders which are accessible by land travel. These borders are located in the Regions of Puerto Maldonado (border with Brazil to the west of Peru), Puno (border with Bolivia to the west of Peru), Tacna (border with Chile to the south of Peru) and Tumbes (border with Ecuador to the north of Peru). The main international bus companies are listed below:

Expreso Cruz del Sur

It travels to Peru (Lima) from Bogota and Cali in Colombia, Quito and Guayaquil in Ecuador, Santiago de Chile in Chile, and Buenos Aires, Córdoba, Jujuy and Mendoza in Argentina.

Expreso Internacional Ormeño

It travels to Peru (Lima and Cusco) from Bogota and Cali in Colombia, Quito and Guayaquil in Ecuador, Santiago de Chile in Chile, Buenos Aires and Mendoza in Argentina, La Paz in Bolivia, and San Paulo and Rio Branco in Brazil.

Transporte Internacional Litoral

It travels to Peru (Arequipa, Cusco, Juliaca, Lima, Puno, Tacna, Ilo) from La Paz.
