Highlights

  • This hike can be done in one or two days. If hiking the 2 day version, the hike usually starts at the Archaeological Site of Tambomachay and can end at Lake Piuray or Lamay Town. If hiking in one day, the hike usually starts in Lamay Town and ends in the same town.
  • The 2 day version is not booked by many travelers. On the other hand, the 1 day version is more popular. Some agencies offer this hike as a 1 day excursion combining the tour with some other activities such as an offering to the "Pachamama" (Mother Earth) with the guidance of an Andean Shaman.
  • The 2 day version is a moderate hike when ending in Lake Piuray, and it is an easy to moderate hike when ending in Lamay Town. The small community of Pucamarca is usually chosen to be the first campsite when hiking to Lamay Town, and the Huchuy Qosqo Archaeological Site is usually the campsite when hiking to Lake Piuray.
  • This hike allows travelers to get in touch with locals, learn their customs, and enjoy beautiful landscapes including views of lakes, snowy peaks, and the Sacred Valley of the Incas, as well as the Huchuy Qosqo Archeological Site, which was an important site during the Inca Empire.
  • The traditional 2 day Huchuy Qosqo Trek is usually combined with a visit to Machu Picchu; tour operators include in their tour packages round trip train tickets, entrance ticket to Machu Picchu, and accommodations in Machu Picchu Town.
  • Travelers should allow themselves time to get used to the high altitude of the trek by spending a couple of full days in a high altitude city such as Cusco. Also, travelers should be in good physical shape to truly enjoy this route.
  • If Huayna Picchu in Machu Picchu is included in your itinerary, an entrance ticket to Machu Picchu with access to Huayna Picchu MUST be purchased well in advance. (Only 400 people are allowed access to Huayna Picchu per day.)
