Location: It usually starts in Lares Town, located in the Province of Calca, Region of Cusco; it can end in either of the following locations:

• Yanahuara Community, located 9,970 feet above sea level (3,038 m.a.s.l.)
• Patacancha Town

Distance from Cusco Downtownto Lares Town: 147 kilometers - 4 hours by private transportation

• This hike usually starts with a visit to the natural hot springs of Lares. The yellowish water of the pools are said to have medicinal properties, helping to relieve the symptoms of some illnesses such as arthritis or stress.
• The route takes the traveler through very small Andean communities where locals still practice their millenary customs and habits. Locals are usually willing to interact with travelers. (Knowledge of Spanish is necessary to do that.) Some of these communities are extremely poor; therefore, bringing some gifts for the kids (pencils, pens, color pencils, notebooks, healthy snacks, or some clothing) is always very welcome. This is definitely the best hike to interact with locals.
• This hike is usually very lively since there will be some locals herding their llamas, alpacas, or sheep in the area. There are a few small lakes on both routes; therefore, there is a chance to observe some local birds and fish. The surrounding snowy peaks and mountains provide beautiful landscapes in the high Andean terrain.
• The Lares Trek is among the most popular hikes in Cusco a ter the Inca Trail and the Salkantay Trek, and who ever decides to hike the Lares Trek won't regret it. It is important to know that this is a less strenuous hike compared to the Inca Trail and the Salkantay Trek.
• The first campsite is usually located in Huacahuasi Village. The second day of the trek, the campsite will vary based on the chosen route. Lake Ypsaycocha is the second camp site when hiking to Patacancha Townand Punta Toro or Mantanay when hiking to Yanahuara. This route allows travelers to get creative with the itinerary; therefore, many tour operators modify the traditionally offered itineraries. Most tour operators include avisit to Machu Picchu with the standard entrance ticket, round trip train tickets, and one night of accommodations in Machu Picchu Town.
• Travelers should allow themselves time to get used to the high altitude of the trek by spending a couple of full days in a high altitude city such as Cusco. Also, travelers should be in good physical shape to truly enjoy this route.
• If Huayna Picchu is included in your itinerary, an entrance ticket to Machu Picchu with access to Huayna Picchu MUST be purchased well in advance. (Only 400 people are allowed access to Huayna Picchu per day.)

• Travelers with health issues such  as cardiac conditions, asthma, or pulmonary infections should ask a doctor before hiking the Lares Trek.
