Arequipa Colonial Churches

& Sites

When the Spaniards arrived in Peru, they needed to find a place to connect Cusco and Puno with the Pacific Ocean since Lima was too far from both of those regions. During their excursions they decided to settle and build cities in Arequipa and Camana. As a consequence, Arequipa became oneof the most important cities for the viceroyalty of Peru and Kingdom of Spain. Arequipa is probably the city with the best exhibition of Colonial architecture in Peru, which made it possible for downtown Arequipa to be included in the World Heritage List of the UNESCO.
