Highlights

Highlights

  • Ollantaytambo Town has traditions dating back a thousand years (Tampus people of Pre-Inca origin). This town conserves the original design implemented by the Incas, who built a fortified citadel with well-developed water channels, terraces for agricultural purposes, mountain storages, temples, plazas, and houses. Despite the constant flow of tourists, the town maintains its roots and traditions.
  • The Ollantyatambo Archaeological Park occupies 34,800 hectares, and the town is surrounded by mountains, its most important building having been built into the side of one. This building is composed of Andean terraces, temples, ceremonial rooms, water channels, and fountains. Some researches believe that this site has the shape of a Llama. At the other mountain, located in the opposite direction, there are several storage rooms, but more important is the carved silhouette of Viracocha, the most important deity of the Incas.
  • The last important train station before heading to Machu Picchu is located in the Town of Ollantayambo; therefore, this small town is well prepared to welcome travelers. This town offers several types of accommodations, restaurants, handcraft stores, and more. It is a great place to spenda night before hiking to the Inca Trail or Machu Picchu.
  • Ollantayatmbo is included in most of the Sacred Valley tour itineraries offered by tour companies. A visit is usually included along with the archaeological site of Pisaq. Ollantaytambo usually gets pretty crowded between 2:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
  • When buying the entrance ticket, verify the number of sites you would like to visit, and based on that, purchase either the partial or the full ticket. Tickets for only this site are not available for sale.
