Location: Oropesa District, Quispicanchi Province, and Cusco Region.

Distance from Downtown Cusco: 27 kilometers by car - l hour by private transportation.

• It is believed that the archaeological site of Tipon was built by Inca Huirachoca (aka Viracocha or Wiracocha), a king who ruled around 1400 to 1438. This site was probably built during the early years of his reign to serve as a military fortress, and it is believed that his father, Yahuar Huaca, spent the last years of his life here.
• Tipon has a length of 239 hectares, inside of which are twelve terraces built side by side and many perfectly built water channels. The architecture of Tipon demonstrates the great hydraulic knowledge of the Incas, who used water channels to improve their agricultural practices. The site is in a perfect state of conservation, and its channels are still in use, allowing visitors to observe water running from one channel to the next.
• The site is located on the southern gradient of the Pachatusan Mountain. To get there travelers need to pass through the Town of Tipon. From the town visitors can hike up to the archaeological site using a portion of the original Inca Trail. However, this is a demanding hike. The Town of Tipon is popular with the locals due to a Peruvian dish known as "Cuy al Horno." If visiting the site,"Cuy" should be eaten.
• Tipon is not usually included in the regular tours offered by tour companies in Cusco, but it should be included in every tour itinerary. This is an amazing place with beautiful water channels and fountains which will blow your mind. Usually 2 hours are needed to visit the site comfortably, but if hiking from Tipon Town, you will need to add about one and a half hours onto that time (for average hikers) .
• When buying the entrance ticket, verify the number of sites you would like to visit, and based on that, purchase either the partial or the full ticket. Tickets or only this site are not available for sale.
