Location: Lucre District, Quispicanchi Province, and Cusco Region.

Distance from Downtown Cusco: 34 kilometers - l hour by car.

• Pikillacta is an archaeological site surrounded by many questions and mysteries. It is believed that the site's location was first occupied by early Peruvians, possibly the Marcavalle people. Later on, the Wari Empire took over this land and built a citadel housing a large well-organized population.
• The Pikillacta Archaeological Site occupies 4464.12 hectares. What remains of the site gives proof to the great architectonical achievements of the Wari people. Originally from the Ayacucho Region, these people developed a well-organized society based on religious and military foundations.
• The citadel is surrounded by a 5-meter, square-shaped wall with its corners pointing to each of the cardinal compass points. The citadel seems to be divided in several neighborhoods with houses perfectly demarcated. Many of these houses consist of two floors. In the citadel, one can also find storage rooms, terraces for agricultural purposes, water channels, specific entrance and exit check points, ceremonial temples, squares, and streets.
• Pikillacta is not usually included in the regular tours offered by tour companies, but it should be included in every visit to Cusco. Pikillacta is located south of Cusco and is offered by sorne tour companies as a one­ day tour which also includes a visit to Tipon and Andahuaylillas.
• When buying the entrance ticket, verify the number of sites you would like to visit, and based on that, purchase either the partial or the full ticket. Tickets for only this site are not available for sale.
