Mejia Lagoons: The ideal sanctuary for birdwatchers!

Location: Districts of Mejia, Dean Valdivia, and Punta de Bombon; Province of Islay; and Region of Arequipa.

Distance from Arequipa Downtown: 150 kilometers - 2 hours and 30 minutes by private  transportation.

• The Mejia Lagoons is a stop on the migratory bird flyways from the northern hemisphere to the southern one and vice versa.
• It is relatively close to the city of Arequipa and can be visited in one full day. Tours should be arranged in Arequipa since there aren't tour guides on site.
• This is a must stop for birdwatchers. Its quiet environment and proximity to the coastline make this reserve a memorable experience.

Endemic Species:

• 79 species of birds have been reported as endemic. They can be observed all year long in their surroundings.

Migratory Species:

• 80 species of birds have been observed during the seasons of spring and summer. (November and December are the arrival months for birds coming from the northern hemisphere.) 48 of these species come from North America and the Arctic, and the remaining ones come from the southern regions of South America and the rest of Peru.

Restrictions:

• Taking flora or fauna is prohibited.
• After-hour visits (It can be dangerous.)
