Location: Maras District, Urubamba Province, and Cusco Region.

Distance from Downtown Cusco: 57.3 kilorneters vio Chinchero Town - l  1/2 hours by car.

• Moray is an interesting archaeological site which consists of 12 rings of Andean terraces carved on top of a mountain, creating a depression. It looks like a perfectly carved artificial crater. From the top of the site to the bottom of it, temperature can changed by about 5 Celsius degrees.
• It is believed that Moray was an agricultural study center because the range of temperature sand the difference in altitude among terraces could represent the main ecological steps of Peru. (Here, the terraces would have been used for studying and improving the maincrops of Peru.) Some people believe that this site could have been also used for astronomical purposes due to the location of some of the stones whose shadows rnark the beginning of each season.
• There are three of these "Carved" Andean Terraces in the complex, but usually the biggest one is the only one visited on tours guided by a local tour operator.
• The tour companies in Cusco usually offer a traditional tour package including a visit to this site and the Salt Fields of Maras and Chinchero Town. This circuit is usually covered in about 5 hours. This area is great to visit on ATV tours, biking tours, or horse back riding tours.
• When buying the entrance ticket, verify the number of sites you would like to visit, and based on that, purchase either the partial or the full ticket. Tickets for only this site are not available for sale.
