• The area where the Cathedral is located was originally an Inca temple known as Kiswarkancha, which previously was the palace of Inca Viracocha (king prior to Pachacutec, whose rule beganin 1438). Its design resembles a Latin cross and it was built on the site of this Inca temple to implement and enforce Catholicism.
• The current Auxiliary Chapel of the Cathedral (aka del Triunfo Church) was the first Cathedral of Cusco. Probably the most impressive Colonial building in downtown Cusco, the Cathedral was built with enormous stones extracted from Sacsayhuaman.
• A visit to the Cathedral of Cusco must be included in every body's itinerary. The Cathedral holds invaluable collections and pieces of art in all its expressions. For instance, the Carriage of Cusco, made out of silver, is an example of the exquisite work performed by local artisans.
