This is the most popular trek in Peru, and a permit needs to be obtained to access it. (500 permits are available per day.) Only a registered tour operator is allowed to purchase permits, and this tour operator will provide a guided service along the trek and Machu Picchu. Permits should be booked well in advance (4 to 5 months in advance for the high season which goes from April to August and 2 to 3 months for the low season).

The Urubamba River is separated in 2 sections. The lower section of the river usually starts near Urubamba Town and it offers rapids class II and III, while the upper section usually starts near Pisaq Town and it offers class III and IV rapids. Vinicunca is also know by locals as "Apu Winicunca" and/or "Montaña Colorada", and tourists know it as the Rainbow Mountain. It is said that this breath taking geological formation with several ocher tone colors was hidden from thousands of years due to the glaciers that covered this colorful mountain. Only a few years ago the glaciers in the pass melt apparently as a consequence of global warming.
