The Region of Puno is mainly located in the Andean Plateau known as "El Altiplano." The highest navigable lake in the world is located in this territory. In the northern area of the region, the Andean Mountain Range descends dramatically until the Amazon Plains give life to one of the most pristine rain forests in the world, filled with endemic species of flora and fauna. Lake Titicaca is located at a very high altitude. It is not recommended to visit the Region of Puno immediately after arriving in Lima or if coming from sea level. Acclimatization to high altitude should be done in a lower elevation city such as Arequipa, Chivay, or Cusco before heading to Puno.
