Originally the place where the Museum is located belonged to the royal lineage of Tupac Inca Yupanqui (son of Inca Pachacutec).With the arrival of the Spaniards, a Colonial- style house was built and the name of Casa Concha was given to it (named a ter don Jose de Santiago Concha y Salvatierra, who was a member of the Colonial Audience of Lima). Nowadays the beautifully restored house exhibits the largest collection of objects found in Machu Picchu.

The Pre-Colombian Art Museum is located where the Convent of Santa Clara operated during Colonial times. Later on, don Luis de Cabrera y la Cerda acquired the house. In 1981 the "Banco Continental" purchased the place and rebuilt it to restore its Pre-Colombian and Colonial construction and characteristics.
