The Region of Puno has only a few small museums. These mainly exhibit artifacts of the Pucara, Tiahuanaco, and Inca civilizations. An interesting museum in the City of Puno is the Yaravi Ship (originally a warship) built in Great Britain to navigate Titicaca Lake in the l860s. (This is the oldest iron ship with one propeller still in use in the world.)

The museum occupies the house of the German painter, photographer, and Pre-Colombian and Colonial collector Carlos Dreyer. During the 46 years he lived in Puno, Carlos Dreyer collected various artifacts dating back to Pre-Colombian and Colonial times.

The museum was created by the National Institute of Culture to preserve and exhibit the remains of the Pucara civilization found in its main site and surrounding areas of influence. The Pucaras settled in Puno between 250 BC and 380 AD.
